A top executive of Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings said the company has enough chips to keep developing its own artificial intelligence models, despite U.S. export controls on Nvidia’s AI chips to China.
“We do have enough chips for training and continuous upgrade of our existing models,” Tencent President Martin Lau said during a conference call with analysts Wednesday, after the company reported its earnings for the second quarter. Lau also said Tencent has “many options” when it comes to the chips for running AI models. He didn’t specify what kinds of chips Tencent is using but people who work in China’s AI industry say the country’s training of AI models is still heavily dependent on Nvidia chips.
Lau’s comments come at a time when the U.S. has eased chip export restrictions, while Chinese regulators have told domestic tech companies including Tencent to suspend their purchases of Nvidia chips. President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed that he had reached a deal where Nvidia would give the government a 15% cut of the sales of its H20 chips in China in exchange for an export license that enables the firm to sell those chips in China. Trump said he would also consider a deal to allow Nvidia to sell a modified version of its advanced Blackwell AI chips to China.
Tencent’s Lau said the company doesn’t have a definite answer on the chip restrictions. “I think there are a lot of discussions between the two governments,” he said. “We are waiting to see what exactly will come out of that.”
