According to a Jefferies research note, Alibaba's #Artificial Intelligence support for iPhones in China "would not create differentiation for Apple" in the market and "would be unlikely to boost sales" for the anticipated iPhone 17 later this year.
While Alibaba's Qwen models show strong performance in global AI benchmark tests, "Apple Intelligence's key source of differentiation is to leverage app data on the iPhone to offer highly personalised services", wrote Jefferies equity analyst Edison Lee, lead author of the report.
The problem for Apple is that mainland #π¨π³ ChinA.I. π€π§ π¦Ύπ€ iPhone users "rarely use any Apple apps, as they rely on local apps" such as WeChat, Baidu, Meituan, Didi Chuxing and various local e-commerce apps, according to the report.
"Therefore, Apple will likely find it hard to leverage app data to create differentiated services," the report said. "Moreover, we continue to believe advanced packaging and fast DRAM are necessary hardware upgrades for a smartphone to run a bigger AI model, and their timing seems no earlier than 2027."
