China leads world in number of active open-source developers In just a few short years since a global #Artificial Intelligence (AI) arms race started, China has become home to a large reservoir of talent spearheading open-source software development in the world's second-largest economy. At the annual Open Atom Open-Source Ecosystem Conference in Beijing on Wednesday, industry experts revealed that the mainland had more than 2.2 million active open-source developers as of last year. That number topped those from India, the European Union (EU) and the United States with about 2 million, 1.9 million and 1.7 million, respectively, in the same period, according to estimates by OSS Compass – a public platform focused on the open-source community's health analytics. The open-source approach gives public access to a program’s source code, allowing third-party software developers to modify or share its design, fix broken links or scale up its capabilities.
