Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group has launched an open-source artificial intelligence coding model, in a challenge to Anthropic and other U.S. competitors. In a statement released Wednesday, Alibaba touted the new model, Qwen3-Coder, as its most advanced AI coding model to date. The company also said it is open-sourcing its AI coding agent called Qwen Code, which uses the new Alibaba coding model. Alibaba’s latest move intensifies competition in the rapidly evolving market for AI coding. While U.S. companies are racing to launch the most capable coding models and tools, Chinese firms are also stepping up their game. Earlier this month, Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based AI startup backed by Alibaba, released a new model called Kimi K2, whose main strength is coding.
