Ren Zhengfei, founder of China’s Huawei Technologies, said the U.S. “overestimates” his company’s chip design capabilities amid ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries.
In a front-page interview published in the People’s Daily, the Chinese Communist Party’s official mouthpiece, on Tuesday, Ren said that Huawei’s Ascend artificial intelligence chips, which compete with Nvidia’s offerings in China, still “lag the U.S. by a generation.” Ren’s comment follows recent U.S. government warnings that Huawei’s AI chips are manufactured in violation of American export controls.
Huawei has benefited from growing demand in China for domestic AI chips due to U.S. export controls that are forcing Chinese tech firms to seek alternatives to Nvidia. However, large tech companies have yet to make big purchases of Huawei AI chips because of concerns over technical issues, The Information reported last week.
Ren said in the interview that he wasn’t worried about Huawei’s chip performance because the company can bundle chips together to make them more powerful or connect chips into more efficient computing systems in order to achieve better results.
The timing of the publication of Ren’s interview coincided with critical trade talks between U.S. and Chinese officials in London. The officials, including U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, are likely to discuss chip export controls, among other issues. Lutnick has previously said that China is struggling to produce sophisticated chips in high volumes, suggesting that U.S. restrictions are slowing the country’s advancements.
