The Chinese government this week told companies it would only approve their purchases of Nvidia’s H200 AI chips under special circumstances, such as for university research and development labs, The Information reported on Tuesday.
The directive comes roughly one month after President Donald Trump announced that he would allow Nvidia to sell the H200 chip to China, marking the biggest rollback of Biden-era semiconductor export restrictions. The H200 would be the most advanced AI chip allowed for export to China, despite being one generation behind the Blackwell that’s being used by U.S. companies now.
Separately, Reuters reported on Wednesday that Chinese customs authorities this week told customs brokers that the H200 chips are not permitted to enter the country, citing people briefed on the matter.
Customs authorities did not offer any explanation for their directive, nor provided further guidance on whether the ban would be permanent or just temporary, according to Reuters.
