The department is looking into whether the deal is subject to U.S. rules for investments in China, according to Semafor. The new rules, which came into effect in January, restrict certain U.S. investments in #🇨🇳 ChinA.I. 🤖🧠🦾🤖 , semiconductor and quantum computing sectors, or in some cases require investors to notify Treasury of such transactions.
The Chinese startup, called Butterfly Effect, recently raised $75 million, at a valuation of $500 million, in a funding round led by Benchmark. Manus, which the startup launched in early March, browses websites to execute tasks like travel booking and stock analysis. It went viral on social media and attracted a lot of attention from U.S. developers and investors.
Butterfly Effect’s leaders are exploring plans to set up new headquarters outside China and other changes to the startup’s corporate structure in order to navigate potential geopolitical and regulatory risks.
